Christianity’s impact in Ghana is a big deal. With over 71% of the population identifying as Christian, it’s no surprise that the religion has influenced many aspects of everyday life—education, politics, healthcare, and even culture.
But how far does this influence really go? Has it done Ghana good or evil?
In this blog, we’ll explore Christianity’s impact in Ghana governance and society at large and the various controversies, challenge and support surrounding this impact.
Christianity’s Impact in Ghana Education and Society

One of the biggest contributions of Christianity in Ghana is in education. Many of the country’s top schools and universities were founded by churches and Christian organizations.
In Ghanaian primary schools, Religious and Moral Education (RME) is a compulsory subject. Passing RME is required in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to move on to senior high school.
This ensures that Christian teachings are embedded in the nation’s education system.
But churches don’t just stop at schools. They also run community development projects, providing clean water, healthcare, and other essential services, especially in rural areas where government support may be lacking.
While this is largely positive, it also raises controversies—should religion have such a strong influence in education?
Christianity and Politics
Politics in Ghana and Christianity are deeply intertwined. Many of the country’s leaders are openly Christian, and their faith influences their policies and decision-making.
Churches also play an active role in advocacy, pushing for policies that align with Christian values. This was evident in how the leaders were reluctant in assenting to the LGBTQ+ bill in 2024.
Christianity and Healthcare: Healing Beyond the Church
Many hospitals and clinics in Ghana are owned and run by Christian organizations. These faith-based hospitals provide affordable or even free healthcare, especially in underserved areas.
They supplement the national healthcare system and make medical care accessible to people who might otherwise struggle to get treatment. From maternity clinics to mission hospitals, Christianity has had a huge impact on healthcare.
Even with this, some people wonder whether religious beliefs should influence medical decisions, particularly on sensitive issues like reproductive health.
Christianity’s Impact in Ghana Culture
Christianity is everywhere in Ghanaian culture. Gospel music is in dominance and church events are a major part of social life.
Christianity influences everything from weddings, naming ceremonies, paintings to poetry, and even national celebrations often have a religious touch.
While this cultural influence brings people together, it also means that non-Christians can sometimes feel left out.
Ghana is a religiously diverse country, so the challenge is ensuring that everyone feels included, no matter their beliefs.
Challenges and Controversies: The Flip Side of the Story
On the flip side of the coin, here are some controversies or challenges on Christianity’s impact in Ghana:
1. Prosperity Gospel: Some churches preach that wealth and success are signs of God’s favor. This has led to many folding their arms as they wait on God to put ready meals on their table. It also raises concerns about pastors exploiting their followers for financial gain.
2. Balancing Faith and Progress: Some Christian teachings are at odds with modern views on gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and scientific advancements. Finding a middle ground is an ongoing challenge.
Final Thoughts
There is no two ways about the fact that Christianity has played a massive role in shaping Ghana. From education to healthcare to society to/ politics and culture, its influence is everywhere.
But as Ghana continues to progress, finding a balance between church and progress will be important for the country’s future.
